The second project up north for VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) saw a return to north England to create a bold new mural at Debdale Sports Park. With the focus on the new branding of the business and a visual nod to the mining history and the location in Sherwood Forest.
Design and Execution
The mural combines traditional signwriting with modern spray paint techniques. A pounce pattern was used to hand-paint all text, with vibrant Dulux colours standing out against the light grey background.
The design started with a doodle grid, which helped map out shapes clearly. This method made it easier to build up rich greens and greys across the composition. Spray paint brought depth to the forest and colliery, using layered tones to highlight contrast and form.
Each element was carefully applied by hand to create a bold, welcoming entrance to the site.
About the client
VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) is a UK-based social enterprise supporting young people aged 14–24. It helps them learn trade skills by working on real community projects. Young volunteers team up with professional mentors, gaining hands-on experience and qualifications. These projects improve public spaces while building confidence and practical ability. Concept, location & process
The mural sits at Debdale Sports Park in Mansfield. It not only highlights VIY’s refreshed branding, but also celebrates the site’s mining history. Furthermore, it nods to the area’s connection with Sherwood Forest, adding a strong sense of place and identity.
The final piece creates a strong, welcoming visual as visitors enter the site.
