Flip the Streets – Swansea University Mural

Posted: 10th October 2024

We were thrilled to partner with Swansea University to deliver a mural workshop aimed at celebrating the black history of Wales and promoting equality. This mural was created as part of the Flip the Streets Initiative, which supports community groups to visually stand out against hate of all kinds on the streets of Swansea.

The workshop offered Swansea University students not only a chance to express themselves creatively but also the opportunity to take ownership of their personal and cultural stories. Many participants were from BAME backgrounds, and the project provided a unique platform for them to share their talents and perspectives with the wider public. Through this collective process, the students experienced the power of working together and how collaboration can spark meaningful change within their community.

Artist Alex played a key role throughout the project, offering guidance, mentorship, and support at every stage. From the initial idea brainstorming to learning technical skills like spray painting, Alex ensured the students felt confident and capable in turning their vision into reality through this impactful community mural.

Beyond its visual appeal, the mural serves as a powerful educational tool, offering passersby an opportunity to learn about Wales’ often overlooked Black history. By featuring prominent Black figures such as Vaughn Gething and Betty Campbell, who have made significant contributions to Welsh society, the mural enriches viewers’ understanding of the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. It invites reflection, challenges assumptions, and encourages discussions around race, identity, and equality.

This project exemplifies how murals can empower communities and drive positive social change. As we continue to embrace creativity and collaboration, we remain committed to building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
