We were thrilled to partner with Swansea University on a mural workshop celebrating Black history in Wales and promoting equality. The mural was part of the Flip the Streets Initiative, which helps community groups stand out against hate on Swansea’s streets.
The workshop gave Swansea University students a chance to express themselves creatively and take ownership of their personal and cultural stories. Many participants came from BAME backgrounds, and the project offered a unique platform to share their talents and perspectives with the wider public. Through this collective process, the students discovered how collaboration can inspire meaningful change within their community.
Artist Alex played a key role throughout the project, offering guidance, mentorship, and support at every stage. From brainstorming ideas to learning technical skills like spray painting, Alex guided the students every step of the way. He helped them feel confident and capable as they turned their vision into a vibrant community mural.
It highlights prominent Black figures such as Vaughn Gething and Betty Campbell, celebrating their achievements. In doing so, the mural also deepens viewers’ understanding of the nation’s diverse cultural heritage.
It invites reflection, challenges assumptions, and encourages discussions around race, identity, and equality.
This project exemplifies how murals can empower communities and drive positive social change.
