Pontardawe School; Outdoor Classroom

Posted: 28th September 2026

After completing a sweeping painted scene in the school stairwell last year, we were delighted to be invited back to Ysgol Pontardawe to take on a very different mural project.

This time, the school’s outdoor classroom was in need of a refresh. Martin approached us with an idea. Transforming the tired-looking space into something colourful and inspiring, with a strong nature theme.

We decided to create a design inspired by the local landscape. Phil developed a montage inspired by Pontardawe woods and waterfall. Bringing together the shapes, colours and atmosphere and wildlife of the woodlands.

Before any painting could begin, the outdoor classroom needed some preparation. We spent time sanding and scraping away the flaking old paint, creating a sound surface ready for the new artwork. Once prepared, the box was given two coats of primer to provide a clean, durable base for the mural.

Phil then set about transferring and painting the design, gradually wrapping the entire container in a vibrant woodland scene.

It was great to take something that had become tired and weathered and give it a completely new identity. The finished mural brings a splash of colour to the outdoor classroom. While reflecting the woodland and natural landscape of Pontardawe.

After last year’s stairwell project, it was a pleasure to return to the school and create something completely different. This time taking the artwork outside and turning a functional structure into a colourful part of the school environment.
