Bringing the River Tawe to Life: Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontardawe Mural
Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontardawe approached us after seeing our recent project at the Pontardawe underpass. Martin, the client, wanted to brighten up the school stairwell with a mural inspired by the River Tawe. The goal was to highlight key historical and cultural points along the river, creating a visually engaging journey up the stairs.
Design Concept
Phil led the design of the mural, developing a bright7 and inviting palette. He created simple, graphic representations of local landmarks to run up the stairs. Meanwhile, the background was carefully designed to evoke the flowing river, tying the mural together and guiding the eye upward. The design process focused on clarity, accessibility for children, and the celebration of Pontardawe’s heritage.
Accurate Placement with New Technology
To ensure every element fitted perfectly, Tom used the Metaquest headset to scale and position the designs directly on the walls. This innovative approach allowed the team to map the mural accurately, saving time and minimizing mistakes. Thanks to this technology, the layout maintained its proportions and worked seamlessly with the stairwell’s shape.
Painting Process
Once the designs were mapped, Phil and Tom brought the mural to life using emulsion and spray paint. Rollers, brushes, and careful layering helped build the background, while spray paints and detail work emphasized the landmarks.
A Beautiful Location
The mural sits in a beautiful location at the top of Pontardawe, overlooking the town and welcoming students each day. Its vibrant colors and playful graphics enhance the space while reflecting the local history and culture.
