Sometimes a space just needs a spark of creativity to come alive. At Maes Derw School, the sensory garden had long gone unused, feeling unwelcoming to students. To address this, Alisha led both a design workshop and painting workshop, creating a mural that brings vibrancy, calm, and inspiration to the space.
Collaborative Design: Workshops with Students
The project began with a design workshop where Alisha worked directly with a group of art GCSE students. Over a couple of hours, they explored ideas for the garden, focusing on creating a space that was both inviting and relaxing.
Through discussion and sketches, the students helped shape the final concept. Drawing inspiration from Japanese art and zen aesthetics, Alisha developed a calm, harmonious mural that complements the garden’s purpose. The collaborative process allowed students to contribute creatively while learning about mural design and planning.
Bringing the Mural to Life
Once the design was finalised, Alisha took the lead in the painting workshop, using spray paint to bring the zen-inspired imagery to life. The mural incorporates flowing lines, soft colours, and organic shapes to create a soothing environment that encourages students to relax and enjoy the garden.
The hands-on painting process also gave students insight into professional techniques, from layering colours to blending and texture. By combining guidance with creative freedom, the workshop turned the garden into a welcoming and engaging space.
Creating a Space for Calm and Inspiration
The completed mural transforms the once-underused sensory garden into a bright, inviting area. Students now have a space that encourages reflection, creativity, and wellbeing. The project demonstrates the power of collaboration, thoughtful design, and artistic skill in revitalising school spaces.
