Introduction

Our graffiti workshops start with a brief history of graffiti, exploring it’s roots and the story of its evolution into the street art scene of today. We’ll have a selection of images and art books for participants to look through to get inspiration for the sessions. We’ll also start a dialogue about graffiti art, it’s place in society and its culture. We will be on hand to answer any questions the group may have. Our hope is to show graffiti art in a positive light, encouraging it as an artistic endeavor and a vehicle for creative expression. Despite graffitis roots, we do not encourage vandalism, instead focusing on the creative aspects of the art form.

Sketch

We start our sessions on paper, each student picking a 3-5 letter word that will be used as their ‘tag’. We then take you through some of the basic techniques of creating graffiti style art and demonstrate some basic lettering, giving you the tools to begin drawing your own graffiti style pieces. Taking this a step further, we then demonstrate how to go about adding a 3d effect to your letters, giving your sketch more depth.

Outlines

After the class has sketched up their deign, its time to start painting the outlines onto the boards/wall and we start to discuss the basic techniques of can control and the application of spraypaint. Tutors are on hand for help with marking up the initial sketch from paper.

Filling In and Final Touches

Once these mark up lines are in place, we’ll help guide you through the process of filling in those letters, teaching the techniques used for blending colours together and painting cleanly. This is the part where you can really have fun and express yourself, safe in the knowledge that we’ll be on hand to help tidy up any mistakes that might creep in. There will be opportunities for participants to work both individually and collaboratively depending on your preferences.
